Reusable and Efficient Visual Flow Design Patterns (aka “Fun with Flows”)

I use flow to make the Salesforce tool work faster and better for novice as well as experienced users. Reusable sub-flows are the key!

I presented three visual flow design patterns at DF15 that can be reused when automating for duplication avoidance, user efficiency, and data cleanliness at your organizations. I use these constantly:
  • Display Handles (denormalized formula fields designed for UI display in Visual Flow to support a search before add paradigm of data entry using Visual Flow interviews)
  • Upsert Sub-flows for all objects (reusable edit or create sub-flows that make coding fast, data quality consistently high, and powerfully nested objected access within Visual Flow interviews)
  • Escape Mechanism tasks to add additional information outside of/later than focused Visual Flow interview.
